Part one presents some problems connected with the school system in the eastern and western part of Europe, and the educational policy with regard to its influence on school success among less privileged groups in society. It discusses the management of education; elements of educational reforms and their significance for the socially less privileged; the permeability of the school system; alternative schools and subjects; aims of comparative research, its methods and effects.
Part two compares the Polish and Dutch educational system with regard to the following aspects: the organisation of teaching and education in schools at different levels; the right for education and school compulsion; teaching by specialised subject teachers versus teaching by one class teacher.
Part three discusses problems connected with the concentration of effort and means for developing special abilities in some schools and distracting these facilities from other schools. It is shown that this division is similar to a division between schools for pupils from highly and lowly privileged social groups. Suggestions are made for counteracting the formation of ghettos. Special attention is given to the methods of selection of candidates for the various schools in Poland and the Netherlands, and to determinants of selection.
Part four discusses similarities and differences between the Polish and Dutch educational system with regard to professional specialisation in fields like: agriculture, navigation and fishery, technology, domestic science, trade, economics, administration, law, medicine, environment protection, physical education, art, theology and philosophy, social and educational science.
